Ham Radio
|
Pittsylvania County Emergency Management "club" was developed
because of the increasing amount of our CERT members who have
become amateur radio operators for the purpose of providing the
county with emergency communications in times of disaster.
The idea of setting up a club and obtaining a callsign for
our members originated in late 2005. Unfortunately we did not
follow through with this idea until the death of E. L. "Bo"
Martin Jr., who was a 911 Shift Supervisor with the agency and
an avid ham. Bo's callsign was WB4KJR. After obtaining the
systematic callsign KI4OTS, we applied for Bo's callsign with
the love and full support of his widow Judy.
Our ham radio equipment in our EOC and our mobile command
center, as well as the organization itself are all dedicated in
memory of Bo who's true loves were ham radio, public safety and
helping people in times of crisis.
Pittsylvania County Emergency Management is an active and
enthusiastic supporter of Amateur Radio Emergency Communications
and operates a multi-band/multi-mode amateur radio station at
agency’s Emergency Operations Center. Its Mobile Emergency
Operations Center is also equipped with identical amateur
equipment.
The amateur stations are maintained for our use during CERT,
ARES, RACES and SKYWARN activations, and at other times as
deemed necessary by the Pittsylvania County Emergency Management
Director.
Licensed amateur operators that are employees of the
Pittsylvania County Department of Emergency Management operate
the stations. Additionally, County CERT members work and train
closely with our Emergency Management office and are available
to be summonsed to operate these stations.
Lastly, Pittsylvania County Emergency Management holds a
reciprocal agreement with ARES and the owner of the K4AU
repeater, on 146.700 MHz, as a primary source of backup
emergency communications. |
